French actress Léa Seydoux has publicly condemned President Emmanuel Macron’s defence of actor Gérard Depardieu amid multiple sexual assault allegations, calling his remarks “crazy” and stating they reflect a “very bad image of our country.”
The Controversy Unfolds
In December 2023, President Macron expressed admiration for Depardieu during an interview on France 5, stating, “He makes France proud.” He also dismissed calls to revoke Depardieu’s Legion of Honour, France’s highest distinction, arguing that the award is not a “moral tool” and should not be rescinded based on accusations alone .
Depardieu, one of France’s most celebrated actors, has been accused by 13 women of sexual assault or harassment dating back to 2004. In October 2023, he was ordered to stand trial for alleged rape and sexual assault following accusations from two women who worked with him on film sets in 2014 and 2021 .
Léa Seydoux’s Response
Seydoux, known for her roles in Blue Is the Warmest Colour and Spectre, expressed her shock at Macron’s comments. In an interview with The Sunday Times, she described the president’s remarks as “so strange. It was crazy. Why say that? It was really something. It’s crazy he said that, the president. Crazy” .
She further stated that Macron’s defence of Depardieu gave “a very bad image of our country,” highlighting a disconnect between the older generation and younger activists advocating for change. Seydoux praised the younger generation for being “very active” in addressing issues of sexual violence and sexism, noting a shift in societal attitudes .
Public Backlash and Cultural Reckoning
Macron’s comments have sparked widespread criticism from feminist groups and public figures. Sandrine Rousseau, a member of the Green party, accused the president of insulting victims of sexual violence with his defence of Depardieu .
The controversy has also led to international repercussions. In December 2023, the Premier of Quebec stripped Depardieu of the Canadian province’s National Order honour, citing his “scandalous remarks” made in a documentary that included footage of him making obscene comments about women and a young girl .
A Divided France
Seydoux’s criticism underscores a broader cultural reckoning in France, where the #MeToo movement has gained momentum. The debate over Depardieu’s legacy and Macron’s support reflects a generational divide in attitudes towards sexual misconduct and accountability.
As the trial approaches, the public’s response to Depardieu’s alleged actions and the president’s defence will likely continue to shape discussions about justice, celebrity, and the evolving standards of French society.
